The Covid-19 pandemic poses entirely new challenges for all of us. Countries throughout the world are affected – in particular those with already ailing healthcare, economic and social systems. Kenya too has reported cases of Corona, schools have been closed since March 2020, the country’s economy is about to collapse, disadvantaged families are losing their opportunities for income and access to food. We wish to show solidarity in this crisis and quickly provide disadvantaged people in Kenya with emergency relief. Together with our longstanding partner organisation YISOG in the southern district of Loitokitok, Kenya, we would like to:
- provide families in need with food parcels
- provide schools, community centres and families with soap and disinfectants
- provide people with information on the Corona virus and hygiene measures
- hold seminars on early forced marriage and pregnancy – risks that have significantly increased for girls since schools have been closed.
The Corona pandemic has confronted our work in Germany and Kenya with a new, difficult situation. On the one hand we are seeing a loss in donations due to cancelled fundraising events, on the other hand the need for support is growing with children and families in Kenya being severely affected by the current crisis.
